Vattenfall recently announced its first floating solar farm in the Netherlands. The 1.2 MW floating farm will help to power 50% of the ongoing mining and extraction works at a site in Gendringen. This is a practice which should be widely promoted on a global scale, where achievable. Man made lakes and those which arise from the result of quarrying have huge potential to contribute solar power to meet an identified need and reduce pressure on natural resources.
Constant innovation such as this should be promoted, with rooftops in towns and cities looked upon as easy targets through retrofitting to ensure adaptability and sustainability. Increased demand for solar will inevitably drive prices down and help to promote a vital industry for the future.
